New mall needs time to grow but trims drive time

Outlet malls usually offer better deals on brand-name clothes, but until recently, the closest to campus were rather far for convenient shopping. That problem may now be solved for Lone Star College-North Harris folks because the Houston Premiere Outlet just had a recent grand opening, offering over 100 new shops right in the heart of the Cypress-Fairbanks area.

In the past, the closest outlet mall to campus was Katy Mills, and that is nearly an hour of dreadful driving time without traffic. The Houston Premiere Outlet is slightly closer, therefore, easily cutting that drive time for most.

The ads are touting shops offering an impressive collection of designer and name-brand outlet savings of 25 percent to 65 percent. Though this is true, there are still quite a few stores under construction, and the selections found in stores already opened still need time to grow.

Stores such as Kenneth Cole, Levi's, Guess, Puma, Nike, Aldo, Zumiez and Nike are still only offering discounts comparable to Marshalls or TJ Max.

"Because outlet stores are made up of clearance or marked-down clothes, I think the Houston Premiere is still too new for me to find a lot of stuff," said Vy Bui, a student at North Harris.

So far, only at more upscale stores such as Coach and True Religion were there
significant discounts on merchandise.
Students like Luis Maravillo are glad to see brands like True Religion there because they can buy jeans for about $117 compared to $240 in department stores. Brent Wariach was planning to come back to Coach to get his mother a nice tote for Mother's Day.

The Houston Premiere Outlet is at 29300 Hempstead Road in Cypress. To get there from campus, according to mapquest.com:

Go northeast on W.W. Thorne Boulevard toward Wrencrest Lane. Make a u-turn at Wrencrest Lane onto W.W. Thorne Blvd. Turn left onto East Hardy Road, then turn right onto East Richey Road. Turn left onto I-45, the North Freeway. Merge onto I-45 South via the ramp on the left. Then take the Sam Houston Tollway West exit 60B toward Beltway 8 East/Bush Intercontinental Airport. Merge onto Sam Houston Tollway West, then merge onto U.S. 290 West toward Austin. End at 29300 Highway 290.
