Our Hopes For The Next Four Years

Issue date: 5/4/09 Section: Viewpoints
Amid historical heights and life altering sentiments, students at Lone Star College-North Harris openly express their expectations for the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama.
Obama, the first African American president, now attempts to reignite the U.S. economy with new and varied stimuli. He promises "change."
And some, including those pictured, believe he brings, "(an) open mind… optimism…diversity."
There is a sense of hope among many of the students. Though some feel apprehensive about Obama, most students seem justified in their expectations, criticisms, and hopes for the next four years of legislation.
"Hopefully, Obama will inspire people to look past White and Black and see that the only race is the human race," declares Brandon Smith.
"I want Obama to be understanding and supportive of embryonic stem cell research. Bush's closed-mindedness has hindered this research, which could enable me to receive a cornea transplant and stem cell transplant. To see again from my right eye is a dream, only realized by this research," reveals Julie Echols, President of Phi Theta Kappa.
Others share their thoughts surrounding
our economic state of crisis.
"My expectation from President Obama is a better economy. I'm hoping his new economic plan will create more jobs," states Cassandra D. Thomas.
Generally, the students agree that change is imminent.

The sentiments you described are very common amongst the general population of Obama supporters. It has been a few months since this article was written - what do you think of him now? It would be interesting to have a followup article with a new survey of student opinions about how the current administration is going. (Continued…)

Each student hopes for the best. Unfortunately we still can't see any movements towards it.
